Background
The Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island (JCRC-LI) was
formed in order to establish a long term community relations agenda that
is essential for the well-being of a vibrant Long Island Jewish
community. The leadership of JCRC-LI will be comprised of Jews from both Nassau and
Suffolk counties who are involved in Jewish, civic and business
organizations. They willl work with the leadership of UJA-Federation of
NY’s Long Island office and its beneficiary agencies. In addition,
JCRC-LI will work with area synagogues, Jewish day schools, and other
Jewish organizations.
Long Island, home to approximately 2.8 million people (350,000 Jews), has been undergoing major demographic transformations. Long Island has growing Hispanic as well as Asian (Indian, Korean, Chinese) communities. As of 2010 the number of Hispanics equals the number of Jews. In addition, the large Catholic and Black populations provide other opportunities to foster intergroup relations. Long Island institutions and neighborhoods face a plethora of issues with the increasing diversification of its residents. It is important for the Jewish community to build on existing relationships and develop new ones with leaders of the established and emerging communities. JCRC-LI will ensure that the Jewish community has a voice among the leaders of the community and will work with others fostering a spirit of collaboration and cooperation to benefit all of Long Island.
JCRC-LI will serve as a central coordinating body for Jewish community relations across Long Island. It will operate as a nexus between community-based organizations and public and private institutions and will work to open the lines of communication between communities. JCRC-LI will draw upon resources from the staff and lay leadership of JCRC-NY and bring a valued added organization, not only by Long Island Jewish institutions, but also by the non-Jewish community.
