Security and Emergency Preparedness Training for Organizations
JCRC-NY partners with the DHS, the FBI, the NYPD, the NYC Office of Health and Mental Health, the NYC Office of Emergency Management and John Jay College of Criminal Justice to provide a broad array of trainings to promote organizational preparedness. JCRC-NY, with our partners, provides training workshops for organizations within the Jewish community and beyond (in conjunction with Intergroup Relations/CAUSE-NY). Past offerings  include: introduction to all-hazards planning, security awareness, detecting hostile surveillance, developing evacuation and lockdown plans and securing your synagogue during the High Holidays. To develop custom trainings for your organization contact Security & Emergency Planning.

With 9/11 lessons and other disasters in mind, JCRC-NY partnered with John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Jewish Federations of North America to develop Emergency Planning: Disaster and Crisis Response Systems for Jewish Organizations. The manual provides guidance using scenario-based planning for all-hazards emergency preparedness for nonprofit organizations. View or download

Personal, Household and Community Preparedness
JCRC-NY partners with the American Red Cross of Greater New York (ARC-NY) to promote personal, household and community preparedness. Several JCRC-NY staff members are trained as members of the ARC-NY Disaster Reserve and certified as trainers in various topics, including Ready NY. The JCRC-NY/ARC-NY partnership: encourages organizations to offer workshops to teach individuals how to prepare for emergencies – in English and Russian; recruits New Yorkers to train as shelter volunteers in the event of an emergency; and works to ensure that emergency responders are able to provide culturally competent disaster services in Jewish communities and to all New Yorkers.

Hate Crimes
Hate crimes have a special effect on our society. They are crimes that transcend their immediate victims and can weaken or even rend the very fabric of our society. They are contagious. Racial slurs beget more racial slurs, swastikas beget additional swastikas, and nooses beget other nooses. JCRC-NY believes that the serious investigation and prosecution of hate crimes is the most effective tool to combat hate crimes. By forcefully speaking out, community leaders can set the tone that hate crimes will not be tolerated.

JCRC-NY testified to the NYC Council on hate crimes. The testimony describes JCRC-NY's strategies and long term partnership with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors dealing with hate crimes.  Read JCRC-NY's Testimony (PDF)
