JCRC-NY mourns the passing of Judah Gribetz, z’l, JCRC-NY President from 1992–1995, dedicated public servant, attorney, author, and respected civic and Jewish communal leader.

Judah served New York in many important roles, including helping guide New York City through its economic crisis in the 1970s. He served as New York City Buildings Commissioner, Deputy Mayor for Governmental Relations, and Counsel to Governor Hugh Carey. He later served as the court-appointed Special Master for the landmark Swiss Banks Holocaust settlement, helping develop the framework for distributing $1.25 billion to Holocaust survivors and their heirs. An accomplished author, he also co-authored The Timetables of Jewish History. He was known for his brilliance, humility, and unwavering commitment to public service.

During his tenure as JCRC-NY President, Judah led the organization through a pivotal period for both our city and our community. Under his leadership, CAUSE-NY—now known as the Center for Shared Society—was established to strengthen relationships across communities in the aftermath of the Crown Heights riots, and JCRC-NY adopted the Board of Directors governance structure that continues to guide the organization today.
